History Opera
Opera began production in 1994 as a research project of Telenor, Norway's largest telecommunications company. In 1995, Telenor branched out into a separate company called Opera Software ASA. Opera was first released with version 2.0 in 1996, which only ran on Microsoft Windows. In an effort to capitalize on the emerging market for internet-connected handheld devices, a project to integrate Opera into mobile device platforms was initiated in 1998. Opera 4.0, released in 2000, featured a new cross-platform core that facilitated the creation of versions of Opera for multiple operating systems and platforms.
Until then, Opera is a trial software and must be purchased after the trial period is up. Version 5.0 (released in 2000) was the last trialware version. After that, Opera is sponsored by ads, showing ads to users who pay for it. The next version of Opera gives users the option of viewing banner ads or targeted text ads from Google. In version 8.5 (released in 2005) advertising was completely removed and the main financial support for Opera came through Google (with a contract for Google as the search engine for Opera).
